Dean Henderson is back in training and building up the fitness levels for Man United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad is taking shape nicely. In most positions, our Baby Faced Assassin has top-quality options. His depth at goalkeeper is particularly strong.
David de Gea has been widely regarded as the best in the business in the not too distant past, while Dean Henderson is pushing hard for that number one shot.
The latter, sadly, has been on the sidelines for a lengthy period of time following a serious bout of Covid-19. The 24-year-old didn’t feature in pre-season at all, while he’s been nowhere to be seen in training.
Well, the good news is that the United star is back working hard on the training pitch, according to the gaffer himself. Solskjaer gave us the update at his pre-Southampton match press conference yesterday:
“With regards to Dean, he was tired after trainings. He felt that. We needed to check him up. Now he feels much better. He’s passed all the tests we’ve gone through with him.” Solskjaer told ManUtd.com.
“He’s training and building himself up again because he’s lost a few weeks. He’s working hard in the gym, working hard on the grass.”
This is massive. Obviously, Hendo and De Gea were going back and forth in between the sticks last season, and I thought this was Henderson’s time to take full control.
Sadly, this illness has meant he’s now firmly in the back-up position through no fault of his own – meaning he has to work twice as hard to force his way back into the mix.
What this means going forward, I’m not so sure. Solskjaer has always given off the impression he prefers De Gea, so until the Spaniard starts making some big mistakes, I reckon it’s his position in the side to lose for the time being.
I don’t doubt that in the next few months, the pressure will start to ramp up once again and these two will both prove why they deserve to be starting games regularly.
