There’s no doubt about it, a Dean Henderson Man United debut was the shining light for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last night.
The budding shot-stopper was relatively quiet throughout, though he did make one excellent save to preserve his clean-sheet, while his kicking and distribution were great throughout.
To have the mental strength to switch on and make that outrageous save, when the game was on a knife-edge, too, tells you everything you need to know about his character and mentality.
This is a young man who is only going to improve, while three years out on loan has definitely given Henderson a real chance to make it at Manchester United.
It’s sometimes easy to forget, but Henderson, like us, is a fan. He has been at this club for the best part of a decade. Now, his hard work is beginning to pay off.
After the game, Henderson couldn’t hide his excitement, sending a brilliant message to the Man United fans after making his debut:
Here at Old Trafford Faithful, we love Henderson. We’ve been banging that drum for the best part of twelve months now. If I were in charge, I’d give him the start against Brighton this weekend.
For now, I think David de Gea’s place in the line-up will survive. However, if the Spaniard continues to make mistakes, while constantly looking shaky, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have no choice but to make the change, although at this stage, I reckon he’d prefer to stick with De Gea.
It feels like a case of when rather than if. Henderson is ready, willing and able. He loves this club just like each and every single one of us. He plays with a passion, confidence that De Gea once showed. Making the change is a bold move, but it feels like an inevitability.
