For all their faults over the last half-decade, Manchester United have got their goalkeeper position absolutely spot on.
David de Gea remains the best in the business while Sergio Romero is a top-level back-up. In terms of youth, Joel Pereira simply cannot be forgotten about and Dean Henderson seems like an absolute star in the making.
It’s Henderson who we’re talking about today. According to the Daily Mail, the 22-year-old rejected an initial contract offer from United this summer – although he’s now closer to agreeing a new deal at the Theatre of Dreams…
His future has been somewhat up in the air this summer as Henderson hasn’t been involved on pre-season tour. The Mail does state that once his new United contract is all ironed out, the shot-stopper will be heading back to Sheffield United on loan for another season – presumably to continue his development.
With talk of a David de Gea new contract growing, I do wonder what the future holds for Henderson. I just don’t see the Englishman being happy to spend the next few years on various loan spells or sitting on the bench and playing back-up. This is a talented young man who wants to play so we could end up losing him in the long-term which could be a massive shame.
If we know that his future remains uncertain here at Old Trafford, he’ll know that too. It’s probably why the first contract offer from United was rejected as the player will either seek more assurances about his future or ask to be paid more handsomely… He’s well within his rights to do that, too.
