For all their faults over the last few years, Manchester United have been pretty good when it comes to choosing goalkeepers.
David de Gea has been amongst the best in the world while Sergio Romero is arguably the best back-up within the sport. Joel Pereira is still mega-talented, as is Dean Henderson.
The 22-year-old Henderson spent last season on loan with Sheffield United – a spell in which he greatly impressed. The Englishman became a real cult hero amongst Blades fans and understandably, they’d like him back for their first Premier League campaign in close to a decade.
While speaking to the media today, Henderson sent out a strong message to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by claiming that he feels he’s now ready to play for United – and make a positive impact.
‘Whether that is at Manchester United, Sheffield United, wherever, I’m good enough to be a Premier League goalkeeper. I deserve that chance.’ Henderson is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
‘It’s a tough one to say where. But do I think I should be playing at Manchester United now? Yes I do.
‘I think I am good enough and I would help the team a lot, in a positive way.
‘If not there I’m sure I could go back to Sheffield United, play a season and then I’ll prove to Manchester United what they are missing.‘
First and foremost, you have to admire the attitude. Henderson has the outlook of a man who’ll go an extremely long way in this game and it’s brilliant to know that he’s ours.
He’s still young for a goalkeeper, though, and unless United are planning to cash in on David de Gea this season, I feel as if spending the next year with Sheffield United makes the most sense as he’ll be playing week-in-week-out.
In the unfortunate event that De Gea does depart then for me, Henderson has to be the replacement. It’d continue with signalling the dawning of a new era at Old Trafford, and although it will take some time to get us back where we belong, at least we’d all know where we stand.
