Declan Rice ‘stunk of a Manchester United signing’ as the Englishman put in another top-drawer display this weekend.
Declan Rice has often been linked with a Reds move. The last time we covered those claims were back in April, though there were whispers doing the rounds during the summer transfer window, too.
The Englishman is at the heart of a West Ham team who are proving many doubters wrong this term, while international call-ups for Rice are almost guaranteed going into any international break.
This weekend, Rice’s West Ham side would continue their great form with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Leeds United. Once again, the midfielder put in another colossal performance, single-handedly winning the midfield battle at times.
I think it’s expected that eventually, Rice will move on to bigger and better things. Well, pundit Tony Cascarino has praised the classy 21-year-old, labelling him someone who ‘stunk of a Manchester United signing’.
Check out what Cascarino had to say about Rice here:
“Declan Rice was superb,” Cascarino said live on talkSPORT, on Saturday. “He absolutely ran the show in midfield.
“He was up against Kalvin Phillips as well, who is a good player, and I thought he just took the game by the scruff of the neck.
“He just stunk of a Manchester United signing to me. I was sat there thinking, ‘Wow!’”
There’s no doubt Rice would be a top-quality addition for pretty much every squad in world football. However, West Ham aren’t going to let him go cheaply.
For me, he’s slightly better right now than Scott McTominay, though Rice is also a little younger than the Scotland international. Both are pretty similar in terms of style though Rice’s passing is what gives the West Ham man the edge.
The question is, would Rice be worth spending big money on? At this point, I’d urge the Reds to sort out other holes first. You look at the right-wing slot as a major need, while another centre-half and right-back definitely wouldn’t go amiss either.
Don’t get me wrong I do agree with Cascarino, Rice looks like someone tailor-made to play at Old Trafford week-in-week-out and the fans would love him. I’d just like to see other areas prioritised first.
