England and West Ham midfielder, Declan Rice, will reject a new contract offer as rumours about his future continue.
Manchester United need to strengthen their midfield over the summer. There’s no getting away from that fact.
Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are leaving. Question marks about Fred and Scott McTominay remain. Hence, the Red Devils need to go out there and acquire a truly great holding midfielder that they can trust wholeheartedly.
Now, the West Ham midfielder is back in the headlines yet again. The story comes from the Scottish Sun. The report actually offers United a boost in pursuit of the 23-year-old Reds target.
Apparently, Rice is set to reject a new contract offer that’s on the table from West Ham – and it’s a massive deal, at that. Apparently, the Hammers want to tie down Rice for the next eight years, giving him £200,000-a-week to commit the rest of his twenties to the London club.
However, Rice will say no, with his reps believing this is David Sullivan (one of West Ham’s owners), playing to the crowd.
The Scottish Sun state that this offer has been made ‘amid interest’ from both United and Chelsea. The pair of Premier League giants have been long-term fans of the Englishman, who has looked superb at both club and international level over the last twelve months.
Rice is desperate to win trophies in his career, with the player and his agent not willing to tie themselves down to a deal they simply wouldn’t be able to get out of – at least for a few more seasons anyway.
With all that said, there’s a belief at West Ham that Rice will spend at least one more campaign with the club, due to the hefty asking price placed on his head. It’s believed West Ham want £150million to let their prized asset leave.
There’s no doubt Rice would be an impeccable signing. Though the price has to be right for United. I wouldn’t go blowing the whole summer budget on just one player, for instance.
I also worry about the lack of Champions League football on offer. If Chelsea can match our offer, there’s every chance Rice would choose the London club over the Red Devils.
