Defensive Duo Fit For New Season

With Rio Ferdinand being the only senior defender on the pre-season tour, Sir Alex Ferguson reassured us all by confirming that duo Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling should be fit for the start of the new season, however Jonny Evans may not be ready for the Premier League opener vs. Everton.

The players and staff arrived in Durban late last night, with Fergie and Rio Ferdinand involved in the first press conference of the tour this morning.

“Evans has had an operation, I’m not sure he’ll start the season but he won’t be far away.” He continued “Vidic will start the season. I am sure of that. He’s still at that level of doing a good amount of training but not the competitive level that the other lads are at. He’s better off staying at Carrington.

“Smalling has done a bit of training. He had a ruptured groin muscle which needed a lot of attention but he’s made gradual progress and we expect him to start the season.”

Ahead of our game with AmaZulu FC tomorrow evening, the boss gave us an insight as to who may feature. He confirmed that new signing Kagawa is likely to start in behind Chicarito. Whilst Robbie Brady could possibly be starting at left-back.

“The priority is to get the experienced players fit but young players will play in each game. It’s likely that Kagawa will start with Chicharito.” He said “Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes will play. So too Anders Lindegaard, Lingard and Brady at left-back. Antonio Valencia will play.

It really baffles me that Fergie has let Fabio go out on loan, we are definitely short in that area of the park. It looks as if he’s relying on Evra staying injury-free for the campaign, or hopefully he has plans to bring in some cover.

“Brady is an outside-left but we believe there’s a possibility he will develop into a left-back. It’s an area which we’re paying attention to as Patrice Evra has played an average of 45 games in the last few seasons. So it’s important for Fabio to get experience at QPR because, touch wood, Evra is never injured.”

You can watch the first game of the tour vs. AmaZulu FC live on MUTV at 7pm (UK Time).
