Demetri Mitchell admits Solskjaer wanted him to stay at Man United

Not too long ago, Demetri Mitchell was being talked up at Man United. He’d have an excellent loan season at Hearts and come back looking to fight for a place in the first-team. A lot has changed since then, though…

The young Mancunian would only make one appearance for the Old Trafford club – back when Louis van Gaal was manager.

Mitchell always looked like he had potential to me, particularly in that left-back slot. His development came at a time when Luke Shaw was struggling with injuries and as a backup option, I always thought he had a chance.

Unfortunately, injuries ended that hope. However, the 23-year-old has admitted that not too long ago, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told Mitchell he had a future at United – despite the pair never working together. The now free-agent also admitted his ‘surprise’ at being told the Baby Faced Assassin wanted to keep him…

Mitchell said:

“I spoke to the current manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, at the back of last season.” Mitchell told the PA News Agency, transcribed by the Manchester Evening News.

“I was quite surprised myself because I’d never worked with him and he was new to me, anyway. He said like he wants me involved and there’s a future here for me.

“I was just on the cusp of getting back fit and then I came back training and my knee just wasn’t right at the time. I had a little few niggles and stuff. It just wasn’t right for me, so up until then it was still a possibility for me.

“I think it was just bad luck, bad timing. Obviously Brandon (Williams) has come in and done great. It’s just unlucky me, really.”

In the end, Mitchell would be released by the Old Trafford club as injuries completely derailed his young career. Right now, the 23-year-old Mancunian is now looking for another side.

This just highlights how fine the margins can be at the very top. Mitchell is probably as gifted as Brandon Williams, though the latter’s breakthrough came at the perfect time. There is so much luck involved with making it within football. Unfortunately, Williams never got his slice of it.

That’s not to say Mitchell isn’t talented enough to still make himself a career in football. At the end of the day, he’s got the best part of a decade to impress. Hopefully, he gets plenty of offers and chooses his next career-decision wisely.

In the end, it feels like Demetri Mitchell had to be released by Man United as he couldn’t keep fit. However, his talent is still there for all to see.
