Manchester United have practically been on a downward spiral since Sir Alex Ferguson decided to call time on his glittering managerial career.
We’re now six seasons deep into the post-Fergie era and it feels as though we’re further away than we’ve ever been in my lifetime. Don’t get me wrong, I feel positive about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s chances, but he’s going to need at least a season or two to show us all what he can do.
In the modern-day game, coaches get less time than ever before to prove their worth. Yesterday, though, none other than Diego Maradona has issued a come-and-get-me plea to United, telling the club ‘he’s the man’ who’ll get he good times rolling again…
“If Manchester [United] need a coach, I’m the man to do it,” Maradona said while speaking to FourFourTwo. “Manchester United used to be my favourite English team for so long.”
“I know they sell lots of shirts around the world, but they need to win trophies, too. I can do that for them.”
First and foremost, you simply cannot doubt the Argentine’s confidence. It’s what made him arguably the greatest player of all time. As a manager, though, it’s fair to say things could have gone better.
Is he the man for the job? Definitely not, but if we could bottle up his personality, charisma and energy, that could certainly come in handy within the current dressing room.
You have to admire Maradona’s ambition, but he must know that he has absolutely no chance at landing this job. I guess with Edward Woodward in charge you can never rule anything out…
