Diogo Dalot admits he wanted Man United stay

Diogo Dalot wanted to remain at Man United over the summer just gone…

Manchester United Football Club have made some iffy signings over the years. I guess that’s only natural. Jose Mourinho can take the most stick for that recently, with the self-proclaimed Special One struggling to get any sort of production from his additions.

One man who sits close to the top of that list is Diogo Dalot. The Portuguese full-back was signed as one for the future. Now, here we are, a few years later with Dalot still regarded as a relative unknown.

Performances for United have been completely mixed. I’m still not sure if he’s a better right-back or left-back. His best assets come in the final third, while defensively, I view Dalot as a bit of a liability.

After spending last season with AC Milan, it felt like Dalot had gotten his career back on track before an inevitable transfer away on a permanent basis.

Well, now we know it was his idea to stay at the club this summer. The United star has admitted as much in a recent interview, admitting he wanted to remain in Manchester and fight for his place.

Check out what Dalot had to say here:

I had two struggling years with my body,” Dalot told The Telegraph“My body was changing and I had some injuries and needed to step up to get to the other players’ level in terms of fitness. It wasn’t growing pains.

“You adapt, then you get injured and when you return the team is at a high level of intense training, playing games. I was probably pushing too much and my body was not dealing very well with that adapting.

“That is why I knew last season was massive for me. My body was feeling those changes and when I went to Milan it was perfect to balance everything and return to this season. That is why I wanted to stay here, fight for games and be an important player for the team.

“I wanted to stay here and the club trusted me to stay here. My mind was completely focused on having an important role in this team.”

First and foremost, you have to admire the fighting spirit. Dalot was never going to give up easily. He wants to prove everyone wrong and show that he can compete for regular starts at Old Trafford.

I do have some sympathy in regards to Dalot’s injury issues. He’s definitely had his fair share of problems ever since arriving at Old Trafford.

However, the fact that he’s still not playing, despite Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s struggles, leads me to believe that Dalot isn’t impressing enough in United training.

Perhaps he is yet to earn Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s trust, hence why the Baby Faced Assassin looked into signing Kieran Trippier over the summer.

Sadly, sometimes it’s best for everyone involved if a split up between Dalot and United actually happens. Dalot needs to move on for the good of his career while United need to get away from his wages and place within the squad.
