Diogo Dalot speaks out on his contract expiring in June

Diogo Dalot sees his contract expire in June 2023, though the Portugal international has seemingly shelved talks – for now at least…

Manchester United Football Club have been on a steep learning curve under Erik ten Hag, with the Red Devils absolutely playing some lovely football right now.

The gaffer has placed his trust in different players than his predecessors, which is natural when a different boss takes charge. One of those who has come to the fore in this current regime is Diogo Dalot.

Signed by Jose Mourinho, Dalot didn’t really star until this season. Suddenly, the Portugal international looks like a top-tier full-back who can do an excellent job over a prolonged period of time.

There is doubt about Dalot’s future, due to a winding down contract. Real Madrid are apparently keen. Others will be sniffing around, too.

Anyway recently, the United star has confirmed it’s not ‘the time’ for contract talks, though Dalot did admit he is loving playing for the club right now.

Diogo Dalot was asked about his contract expiring in June, and he responded (per Fabrizio Romano):

“I don’t think it’s the time to think about my contract situation. We’re in the process to improve our game as team”.

“I love to play for Man United as I always try to show, I’m happy – this is the most important thing”.

It is worth remembering that United do hold the option to extend this deal by a further year, meaning technically, Dalot is tied down until the summer of 2024.

There’s no doubt in my mind that giving Dalot some sort of fresh terms makes sense. He’s still young enough where if it doesn’t work out here at Old Trafford, there’s still sell-on value there for the club.

However, the upside is obvious. Dalot has done nicely under Ten Hag. Why not keep that ball rolling?

United and the gaffer want to bring in another right-back to either challenge Dalot in order to push the ex-Porto man to another level – or eventually take over as the main starter in that position of the field. Aaron Wan-Bissaka doesn’t really seem to be highly fancied right now, so the rumours linking the Reds with a move to sign Jeremie Frimpong make sense.

Do you think Diogo Dalot deserves a new Man United contract amid his current one expiring? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
