Back in February, rumours suggested that Manchester United were plotting a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ ever-improving winger, Diogo Jota.
The Portuguese has been key to Nuno Espirito Santo’s success in the Midlands over the last couple of seasons, with rumours to a bigger club almost inevitable at some point.
Well today, the 23-year-old star has directly responded to rumours linking him with a potential move to United – while Jota also has his say on his countryman, Bruno Fernandes.
“No, to begin with, I am ’18’ and now Bruno Fernandes is also ’18’, so we would soon have a problem. Just kidding!” Jota is quoted as saying by Record (Tuesday print edition) translated via The Mirror.
“It is always good to see your name linked to clubs and with a club of that stature (United). But I also know that this is not the most important thing. Just look at what is happening now with this pandemic.”
First and foremost, it’s definitely worth noting that Jota speaks so highly of Fernandes, while he comes across as a really down to earth, genuine bloke. Amongst the other topics of discussion was his admiration for Everton as a kid – which is all a bit strange but fair play to him!
In terms of the fit at United, Jota definitely is the sort of player that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has leaned towards – quick, young, and willing to learn.
That said, Wolves aren’t going to want to lose a prized asset – particularly as they’re looking to move forward, not take a step back.
Simply put, Jota wouldn’t be cheap and it’s a saga that could drag on all summer eventually to end in failure. Wolves don’t need the cash so they can dig their heels in and ask for an absolutely ridiculous transfer fee. Personally, there are probably more obtainable targets out there, but if the Baby Faced Assassin likes him enough, then why not see if a move is possible?
