D’Mani Mellor will spend the 2021/22 campaign away from Man United, heading to Salford City for the term.
Manchester United’s jam-packed academy is full of ability. Sadly, there’s just not enough minutes to keep everyone happy.
Several United youngsters have already headed out on loan this summer, with another one confirmed over the weekend. Young D’Mani Mellor, who trained with the United first-team just last week, has agreed a deal to join Salford City.
The Ammies confirmed that they’d signed the emerging United talent for the 2021/22 season, with Mellor looking all-smiles as he holds his new jersey aloft.
Mellor, like Anthony Elanga, is highly regarded at Manchester United. However, he too suffered a serious injury which halted his progress pretty significantly.
I’d have bet good money on Mellor making his first-team breakthrough last season if he wasn’t injured, though now, with the United squad looking so stacked in the final third, a loan move away always felt like the best option.
Mellor is someone who needs to be playing games at a higher level than U23 football, while joining Salford means he’ll remain in his hometown of Manchester, meaning he doesn’t have to up-sticks and move away from his place of residence for a year.
As with any loan move, it only works out if he’s playing regularly. It’s up to Mellor to work hard enough to earn those minutes, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will probably have had some confirmation from Salford City that the attacker is firmly in the plans of the manager.
The 20-year-old actually made his debut for his new club yesterday, as a late substitute.
Congratulations on the loan, D’Mani!
