Out of nowhere, Donny van de Beek is seemingly set to sign for Manchester United…
After what feels like months of negotiations in regards to signing Jadon Sancho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the United staff have been quietly working on another deal.
Donny van de Beek of Ajax, is nearing a move to the Theatre of Dreams. Journalist Oriol Domenech actually goes as far as stating that the classy 23-year-old is ‘about to sign’ for Manchester United.
Apparently, there was also interest from FC Barcelona, though Ronald Koeman is prioritising a move for Georginio Wijnaldum instead.
Red Devils interest in Van de Beek isn’t anything new. Edwin van der Sar actually confirmed United’s keenness on the Dutchman back in June. Now, it looks as though Solskjaer is ready to pounce, no doubt working with his former teammate to get a deal over the line.
Who is Donny van de Beek?
The midfielder has honed his talents in the famous Ajax academy, and was part of a side that made it all the way to the Champions League semi-final in the 2018/19 term. With Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech already moving on, perhaps Van de Beek feels his time is now.
United need squad depth. Van de Beek not only brings something different to the table, but he’s more than capable of starting week-in-week-out if Solskjaer needs him to. He can replace either Bruno Fernandes or Paul Pogba when they need a rest, or he can sit a little deeper and form a trio with Fernandes and Pogba if needed.
Unlike a Sancho deal, this feels like a move that wouldn’t completely break the bank, meaning there’s probably more money available to further bolster the squad.
The box-to-box midfielder would bring in massive quality, as United look to build a squad that can compete year-in-year-out. Hopefully, a deal is wrapped up quickly and Edward Woodward can focus on getting other deals over the line.
