Donny van de Beek confirms he can play a deeper role at Man United

Donny van de Beek has confirmed he can sit and play a deeper-lying midfield role if needed.

Last summer, Manchester United’s move for Donny van de Beek definitely had us fans excited. That hope built even further when the Dutchman scored on debut.

However, Van de Beek quickly fizzled out. Confidence was low. The minutes were hard to come by for the former Ajax man – which is always a recipe for disaster.

The midfielder spent his time on the substitutes bench wearing a glum face. The situation wasn’t ideal for anyone. 2021/22 was supposed to be different though thus far, it has been more of the same for Van de Beek – who has cut a forlorn figure amongst the subs once again…

Well, van de Beek himself could have offered a solution; why not play him deeper?

The out-of-favour United star has admitted he can play in that defensive midfield (number 6) role if needed. Furthermore, it’s somewhere he’s played before in his professional career.

Asked by Rio if Van de Beek could play deeper, he responded:

“Yes. I think what I’ve said before, also, I like to play 8 or 6. It’s fine.” Van de Beek told Ferdinand’s FIVE Podcast.

“They know me because in Ajax they was playing me number 10 a lot. Yeah, I can also play as a number 8 or 6.”

Van de Beek added: “I think I can do [play as a 6] but, of course, I don’t know what the manager thinks or what he expects from me. I’ve played in this role before with Ajax.

Of course, at the end I was playing number 10, but I also played a few games number 6. I can play this role. That’s really difficult to say [best position].

“That depends on how you play as a team. For how we play, I think the best position for me is a number 6 or 8.

“I don’t care where! I only want to play, so it doesn’t matter where.”

What I understand from this is that Van de Beek probably prefers to play a little higher up the field, though he does have experience in that holding midfield position.

Van de Beek even acknowledged that in the current setup, he’s probably best playing deeper, though right now he just wants to play football as it has been a pretty torrid year for the Dutchman.

Personally, I’m all for trying it. Let’s be honest, Scott McTominay aside, we’re pretty short in that box-to-box/defensive-minded midfield role and surely Van de Beek can’t do any worse than Fred or an ageing Nemanja Matic?

Honestly, I just want to see Van de Beek out there. There’s a reason why United wanted to keep him around at the club this season and it’s only fair that he gets his chance at some point.

With the cup competitions starting up next midweek, I’m sure we’ll see more of Donny. At the end of the day, it’s the least he deserves. He’s practically begging for an opportunity to prove his worth right now and that makes me sad…
