For Donny van de Beek, the 2020/21 campaign has gone from bad to worse.
Manchester United’s £35million summer acquisition from Ajax actually scored on debut. Since then, it has gone rapidly downhill for the Dutchman.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would mostly leave Donny rooted to the bench and he’d be drip-fed minutes over the course of a difficult campaign. Understandably, confidence dropped as did performance levels.
The European Championships was supposed to be his escape. It was Van de Beek’s time to right the wrongs of 2020/21. Now, that opportunity has been taken away from him.
United’s star midfielder has been dealt a cruel blow, the BBC writes. He’s ‘struggling with an injury’, according to manager Frank de Boer. Now, Van de Beek will miss EURO 2020.
At this point, I just feel sorry for Van de Beek. The European Championships was supposed to be his opportunity to prove Solskjaer was wrong to drop him and hardly give him a kick. Sadly, that chance has now gone.
Van de Beek’s task now is to keep his head up and come back from this groin surgery with a point to prove. Hopefully, he’s fit enough for pre-season as that’ll be his best chance to show everyone what he can do.
This young man obviously has it in his locker, it’s just that 2020/21 was an extremely unfortunate one for Van de Beek. Paul Pogba ended up staying (I believe Donny was bought to replace Pogba), he’s adjusting to life in a new country, learning a new system and getting used to playing with different teammates. Sadly, it was an imperfect storm from day one.
Keep your head up, Donny!
