Donny van de Beek is expected to play a role under Erik ten Hag at Man United.
The overhaul at Manchester United is well and truly underway. Credit where it’s due, the club have resisted temptation and allowed several first-teamers to walk away on free transfers. In the past, the Old Trafford club would hand them big-money deals in an effort to protect the asset, but that’s done more harm than good.
Erik ten Hag’s vision and ideas are being drawn up behind the scenes. No doubt the Dutchman is helping United plot and plan potential summer signings – of which there have to be a fair few due to the mass exodus that’s currently in full swing.
One man who we’ve all thought about going into the new year is Donny van de Beek. The Dutchman struggled under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick. He’d eventually move to Everton on loan in an effort to get some football under his belt.
That loan spell would be somewhat mixed, though injuries definitely didn’t help Van de Beek’s time at Goodison Park.
Well now, Fabrizio Romano has spoken. He has confirmed that the 25-year-old is in Erik ten Hag’s plans for next season.
Apparently, Van de Beek is ‘now expected’ to play a role in the United team, presumably starting from next season.
Van de Beek has been involved in a weird situation. The talent is obviously there. However, the Dutchman has never really shown his capabilities to us supporters.
Whether that’s due to a lack of consistency in playing time, a lack of belief in the player from the manager or a mixture of both remains to be seen.
I’ll be honest. I still doubt the Van de Beek role here in the Premier League. I’m just not sure it’s the right match for what United want to achieve.
That said, if anyone knows how to get the absolute best from Van de Beek, it’s Ten Hag. The midfielder flourished under Ten Hag during their time together at Ajax – and no doubt the player is waiting for the opportunity to prove us all wrong.
I genuinely hope he does exactly that, starting with a positive pre-season.
