Donny van de Beek struggled pretty badly vs West Ham last night, with fans taking to Twitter to express their concern…
Manchester United Football Club spent big to bring Donny van de Beek to Old Trafford over the summer. Understandably at the time, fans were excited.
The Dutchman was a signing made to pre-emp the inevitable departure of Paul Pogba. For what it’s worth, I still think the Frenchman is off this summer.
After a bright start to life in Manchester, including some impressive cameos off the substitutes bench, things quickly fizzled out for the 23-year-old.
As time has progressed, we’ve seen Van de Beek make fewer and fewer appearances. That’s partly down to Pogba playing some wonderful football, but some of the onus has to fall on the player too, who has struggled to impress.
His poor form continued last night against The Hammers. First and foremost, I just don’t feel Van de Beek did enough to get into the game. Sure, he makes some nice runs but they were often unthreatening to the opposing defenders. Maybe that’s a confidence thing, but I’d just like to see more intent.
I’m just not seeing him do what he does well at a high enough level at the moment. Van de Beek was sort of a passer-by, happy to take the easy option in order to prevent making a big mistake. At the highest level, that’s just not going to cut it.
I’d also give him somewhat of a pass as I just don’t think he should play in that number ten position. Simply put, he doesn’t take as many risks as say, Bruno Fernandes, which is exactly what you need in that position.
