Donny van de Beek told he is ‘wasting away’ at Man United

Donny van de Beek has been told he’s a ‘shadow of the player’ he was at Ajax.

Manchester United’s season is now underway. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad is looking in really nice shape going into a huge year for the Baby Faced Assassin.

Our Norwegian manager has made a couple of big signings this summer, as his track record in the transfer market continues to be positive. The one blot on it so far is the move made for Donny van de Beek.

On paper, the Dutchman suits this club perfectly. However, it hasn’t quite worked out that way. Van de Beek has struggled to acquit himself, his confidence looks low and the player looks nowhere near his best.

Now, former Netherlands international, Marciano Vink, has given his take on the situation. The United star has been told he is a ‘shadow of the player’ he was before the United switch, while also claiming Van de Beek is ‘wasting away’ here in Manchester…

Check out what Vink had to say here:

“He is wasting away at United,” he told Voetbal Zone, per the Manchester Evening News live blog.

“Of course he has one of the best, currently number tens in Europe as a competitor. Bruno Fernandes is fantastic. If you see what he did against Leeds United last weekend… I think you get really small on the bench, you want to go home and kick in all the doors there.”

“You’ve got Scott McTominay, you’ve got Paul Pogba… It just won’t work. You saw when he came in last season that he was a shadow of the player he was at Ajax. He walked with his soul under his arm.”

“The balls he got were then just behind him, or not played well, and then you don’t get into your rhythm. It got worse by the week.”

Honestly, that’s a pretty painful read but I understand where Vink is coming from. Van de Beek looked pretty sharp in pre-season, but at the weekend, he was straight back on the substitutes bench cutting a forlorn figure.

I’d like to think the midfielder will get his chances this season, but if Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes continue to play to the standard they’re at right now, I’m just not sure where Van de Beek fits in.

This is a guy who should be starting games with regularity for a top club. United cannot offer him that at the moment, though perhaps there could be an opening if Pogba leaves next summer. Will Donny want to wait that long? I have my doubts.

At this point, I wouldn’t be against moving Van de Beek on and using that money to strengthen the squad in other areas of the field.
