Cavani, Fernandes named in latest BBC TOTW after 3-2 win over Southampton

Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes have been named in the latest BBC TOTW after Manchester United beat Southampton.

Well, they certainly made us sweat this one out. In the end, though, Manchester United would get the job done. They have a stunning El Matador substitute appearance to thank for that!

After plenty of impressive cameo performances as a substitute, we were expecting Cavani to get the starting job in this one. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be but he’s obviously not a bad option to have coming off the substitutes bench, is he…?

As soon as the Uruguay international took to the field, the game changed. We had a target up top, a focal point to base ur attacking play around. When Cavani came on, it also looked like Bruno Fernandes improved, purely by having someone on his wavelength.

The younger players in the squad like Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood can definitely learn from someone like Cavani. For all their talents, they don’t have the experience that the ex-PSG man has. I don’t doubt they’re watching him very closely in training as they could certainly learn an awful lot.

Anyway, for their performances, there are no prizes for guessing which star United duo were named in the BBC Team of the Week after the 3-2 victory over Southampton.

Let’s start with Bruno. He’d struggle to create and carve out openings in the first 45, but it wouldn’t take our Portuguese Magnifico to drag United back into the game when the second-half kicked off. He’d tuck home a lovely Cavani cross to make it 2-1.

Fernandes would then turn creator for Cavani, whipping in a dangerous ball into the penalty area, which El Matador would finish off with a sublime diving header. Cavani would then double his tally in injury time with another outrageously good header, this time coming from an inch-perfect Marcus Rashford cross.

What’s exciting is you feel that this Fernandes, Cavani pairing is already blooming. With time, though, you’d expect it to become even better. If Rashford and Greenwood can rediscover their brilliant best, suddenly, United have a front four that would scare every defence in world football.

Well-deserved, lads!
