Edinson Cavani is finally on his way back to Manchester this week, ahead of United against Leeds this weekend.
Manchester United kick off their campaign in just five more days. Suddenly, it all begins again for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s boys.
In typical fashion, the return to training has been a staggered approach. With both the Copa America and EURO 2020 taking place, several Reds faces needed extended rest. One of those was Edinson Cavani.
Now 34, coming all the way from Uruguay, it was always expected that El Matador was likely to be amongst the last back. Well, now we have a clearer picture as to when to expect him.
According to the usually reliable Jonathan Shrager, the Reds star is ‘probably’ set to fly back to Manchester this Thursday. At this moment, he’s waiting to learn which quarantine rules will apply upon arrival.
My immediate thought is that there’s no way Cavani will be involved this weekend. There’s every chance he’ll have to quarantine for at least five days before he can even train with his teammates, let alone play in a meaningful game.
Sadly, El Matador will have to wait for his first appearance this term – and I’d imagine we won’t see him for a couple of weeks at the very least.
At the end of the day, Solskjaer and United have allowed Cavani extra time off. He’s getting up there in age and I’d rather he miss a few games to start the season and avoid injury – rather than risking his body breaking down in the heat of a potential title fight come next May.
That said, the sooner he’s available, the better.
How long do we think it’ll take Cavani to get up to speed at United? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
