Edinson Cavani is still all set to leave Man United on a free transfer in June.
Changes are afoot at Manchester United. A new manager. Fresh ideas. Different tactics.
Erik ten Hag is expected to take charge next term. He’ll bring a completely different brand of football to the Theatre of Dreams.
It’s down to us fans to be patient with the Dutchman. This squad is in such a mess it’s going to take several transfer windows to fix. First and foremost, it’s about clearing out the players who simply do not want to be here.
One man who fits that profile is Edinson Cavani. According to Fabrizio Romano, the imminent appointment of Ten Hag ‘wont change’ the future of the star who has scored 19 goals for United across the last couple of seasons.
He’s ‘still expected’ to leave on a free transfer this June, with La Liga being talked up as his next likely destination. At this point, it seems the best decision for all involved to let Cavani leave.
Romano also explains that Jesse Lingard is another who is ‘considering options’ to depart on a free.
I’m just so disappointed in Cavani this season. The Uruguay international became a huge cult hero last term, but this season has been totally different.
Cavani has bent over backwards to get himself fit to play for his country, while doing the exact opposite in regards to United. Y’know, the ones who actually pay his wages.
What’s happened behind the scenes we’ll never know, but perhaps it was the change in manager that halted Cavani’s desire to try and finish this season strong. Regardless, it doesn’t reflect well on the player – while also giving potential suitors something extra to think about.
At this stage, it feels like a foregone conclusion that Cavani will leave. United need to get younger upfront and this is also an excellent opportunity to clear some hefty wages off the books.
Cavani has scored just two goals in seventeen appearances this season.
