Man United miss Christian Eriksen when he isn’t available, Erik ten Hag has admitted.

Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle United this weekend, with the Red Devils struggling to stick the ball in the back of the net yet again.

Erik ten Hag’s side are beginning to control matches more, while they’re also now pressing as a unit. However, the lack of quality chance creation is becoming a genuine issue for the Dutchman and this squad of players. No doubt that’ll come over time.

This weekend against the Magpies, the absence of one man was dearly felt; Christian Eriksen.

Eyebrows were raised when the Dane wasn’t included in the squad. We quickly learned he’d been dealing with an illness.

After the fixture, Ten Hag admitted that United ‘miss’ the star when he’s not available. While the gaffer also remained unsure whether Eriksen would be good to go when United take on Tottenham Hotspur this coming Wednesday.

Check out what Erik ten Hag had to say on Christian Eriksen here:

“We miss him when he’s not available,” Ten Hag told Danish station Viaplay, per the official club website. “But we have a squad and another 11 players on the pitch. So then we have to construct another team and we can bring players from the bench, who are all good.

“I can’t tell [if he will face Spurs]. I know you’re from Denmark, and want to know, and I want to express he’s played fantastic, in this moment, for us. In our team, he really contributes to what we are at this moment.

“I don’t know if he will be available for Wednesday but I hope [so], of course.”

Honestly, I think we all underestimated Eriksen’s class and ability. This is a player who has absolutely improved United’s whole squad. He brings calmness, composure and genuine quality to the midfield. United absolutely control games far better with him in the line-up.

It’s easy to forget that this was a free transfer, too. Eriksen didn’t cost United a penny in terms of fee. This really was a smart pickup by Ten Hag, with the 20-time Premier League champions reaping the rewards.

Fingers crossed Eriksen can pass a fitness test for Wednesday’s game against his former club. We’re absolutely going to need him if United are intent on bouncing back with a win.
