Anthony Martial has suffered a setback in his return from injury, Erik ten Hag has confirmed.

Manchester United are starting to have a passenger in the form of Anthony Martial. The Frenchman’s season has been heavily disrupted due to injury, though at some point, he has to start taking at least some of the blame.

Martial had an excellent pre-season, before limping into the campaign. He’s since been sidelined with five different injuries, limiting his minutes (and effectiveness) drastically.

There comes a time when Erik ten Hag has to say enough is enough. Martial is supposed to be United’s first-choice striker when in fact, he’s been absent way more often than he’s been available.

Martial would come off the substitutes bench in midweek as United overcame Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, though he wasn’t in the squad for the game yesterday.

After the match, Ten Hag confirmed that the United star had suffered an injury ‘setback’, adding that United have to be ‘patient’ with the former AS Monaco man.

“He had a setback from the game when he returned,” the boss told MUTV, per ManUtd.com.

“He thought he could build up, but he dropped a little bit back.

“We have to wait, we have to be patient not to force it.”

At this point, it’s just frustrating from a fans’ standpoint. I am no medical expert and I do not know the severity of these injuries that Martial is suffering. However, it’s just super disappointing to see that he’s picked up yet another problem.

Sadly, this is nothing new. Martial has always spent large portions of time out injured ever since moving to Manchester. I think we just have to accept that this is who he is.

I get the feeling that this isn’t something Ten Hag will stand for. The Dutchman has completely exiled Phil Jones from the first-team fold and I genuinely believe he’ll be looking at bringing in a lead striker to replace Martial this summer as he simply cannot trust the Frenchman anymore.
