Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Andre Onana will be available for selection again for their next game.
Manchester United fans finally got to witness Altay Bayindir in action this weekend, during an unconvincing 4-2 performance away at Newport County. The Turk did his job decently enough, with his overall display steady.
It certainly wasn’t enough to leave Andre Onana worried about his starting spot in between the sticks upon his return from AFCON. Despite the fact the Cameroonian was dropped in favour of his cousin during the tournament.
After the game, United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed when Onana will be back available for selection again, with the shot-stopper looking set to return for Thursday’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Onana has only ended up missing one game for the Red Devils while away with Cameroon, none of those were league matches, meaning Altay will now return to the bench in a few days’ time…
Here’s what the gaffer had to say in full here:
“Andre Onana will be back for Thursday.“ Ten Hag told ManUtd.com.
“Maybe, for the first time as long as I was manager, I can pick a team from the squad that is probably the strongest here.”
While it is true that United’s injury issues are now easing, I’m still mightily concerned. The Reds were made to look very average against League Two opposition. A change in goalkeeper doesn’t change the fact that in terms of the outfield, it just isn’t good enough.
For this term, it’s about accepting what this group of United players is – and that’s a very average Premier League side who can lose in any given match.
I actually don’t think Onana is as bad as being made out, though I don’t think he’s been close to worth the £50m he cost to sign over the summer. He’s undoubtedly our best goalkeeper, though he’s nowhere near as good on the ball as I was expecting, while David de Gea is a superior shot-stopper.
The issue here is that Onana will now be low on confidence after being dropped while away with his country. Let’s hope he can rediscover that self-belief sooner rather than later as we’re going to need him…
