Erik ten Hag was pleased enough with the full Man United debut from Wout Weghorst, given the circumstances.

Yesterday evening was a genuine jolt back down to earth for Manchester United and their fans.

The Old Trafford side played some good stuff in the first 45, taking a first-half lead through Bruno Fernandes. However, the performance went a little flat in the second half, allowing Crystal Palace to get back into the game with a late equaliser.

Eventually, the game will be remembered as one where Wout Weghorst made his full United debut. It was never going to be easy for the Dutchman, who has only been at the club for a couple of days, before being thrust into the starting line-up with big expectations on his broad shoulders.

After the game, Ten Hag had his say on Weghorst’s full debut against Palace. He seemed quite positive about it on the whole, though again, circumstances made it tough for the big man.

“Less training, no games, a couple of days here but he did quite well in all elements.

What I will give Weghorst immense praise for is his role in the United goal. He dragged three defenders away, allowing Bruno Fernandes the space inside the box to fire home.

You can see that there’s a decent player in there, though you can also understand why Weghorst, in the long run, will be nothing but a back-up for most Premier League sides.

There’s a real lack of pace there, while his hold-up play last night was pretty decent. Sadly, he didn’t really get any real chances to show his true finishing prowess when staring down on goal – but hopefully, that’ll start to happen for him in the coming weeks.

I still believe Weghorst will more than play his part between now and the end of the season. He just needs time to adjust and adapt to this system.
