Erik ten Hag defends decision to keep Marcus Rashford on amid boos from Man United fans

Erik ten Hag has backed his decision to keep Marcus Rashford on the field, amid booing from Man United fans during the Liverpool game.

Manchester United were brutally taken apart by Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, with the Red Devils losing 3-0. Honestly, it could have been worse than that…

Erik ten Hag’s side were second best throughout, failing to compete in all aspects and struggling to get any sort of foothold in the game. While Casemiro will feel the brunt of the fan furore, he was not the only one who struggled.

The manager also has to take some responsibility. This is a massive season for the Dutchman who now has no more excuses after being heavily backed this summer. Unfortunately for him, the booing has already started. When Ten Hag chose to remove Alejandro Garnacho from the game, in favour of Amad, the unhappiness was audible…

Now, Ten Hag has defended his substitution decisions, claiming that it was right to keep Marcus Rashford on, despite what many thought was another poor performance from the Englishman.

Check out what the gaffer had to say in full here:

‘It was the first start for [Joshua] Zirkzee and for [Alejandro] Garnacho. Then you decide to bring players on who can have an impact,’ Ten Hag told the BBC.

‘[Amad] Diallo, he deserved it [to come on]. he can have an impact. We then brought a player off who is not used to 90 minutes.’

‘The second thing as well, Rashford had some very good assists for Zirkzee. So he had an impact in the game,’

I fully get why Amad came on, though I did not agree with removing Garnacho. He was working hard and looking threatening, while over on the other side, Rashy was drifting in and out of the game. Yes, he created a couple of chances with some crosses into the box, but they were only half-chances and that’s just not enough.

Rashford was largely a non-factor throughout proceedings and we all know the only reason he gets away with it is because of the massive money he’s earning. United gave him that deal and they’re trying to keep him in the side in the hope that his form returns. Sadly, this slump has been ongoing for well in excess of 12 months now. I do not see it changing anytime soon.

It’s already a tough situation for Ten Hag. We’ve played three games and he’s already under massive pressure. Fail to win against Southampton in two weeks time and I reckon supporters will already be calling for him to lose his job.
