Erik ten Hag explains what ‘excites’ him most about Man United job in first interview

Erik ten Hag has conducted his first official Manchester United interview.

For manchester United, a new era starts now. Erik ten Hag is in the building. He’s already working hard to mould and shape this club into one that fits his image.

The fact that he’s begun work six weeks earlier than first anticipated is a massive positive. Ten Hag is motivated and hungry for success at Old Trafford. He’s going to need every ounce of that to succeed here in Manchester.

Today, the club released the first part of his official opening interview and I have to say, Ten Hag came across brilliantly. He spoke well, feeling very positive about our chances going forward.

Perhaps the best quote was what he said excites him most about the United job. The fact he immediately pointed to the fans had us hooked, while talk of building a team that is willing to battle for each other is also hugely important.

When asked what excites him most, Erik ten Hag responded:

“I think many [reasons]. First of all, we want to make the fans proud. Second, of course we are in this moment, the current situation is obviously not that good. It’s a big challenge.”

“I want to build and construct a team who are battling for each other, who are unified and who will get results.

Also we are playing in the Theatre of Dreams. We want to entertain. But in the end, the intention is to play fantastic football. If we can’t play fantastic football, we still have to win.”

It goes without saying, this club is based upon entertainment and playing on the front foot. We haven’t done that over the last few years and it’ll take time to change that mantra.

As a minimum, we just like to see the required effort being put in. That has been lacking this term. The players have looked very unwilling to work hard and fight for every ball. Let’s hope the arrival of Ten Hag can change that.

Ten Hag also understands that this is a results business. United cannot play attractive football every single week. Sometimes, it’s about getting over the line with the victory rather than putting on a real show. I guess it’s all about finding the right balance.

Either way, I was very impressed with what Ten Hag had to say. Obviously, this is just the beginning. It’ll take time to implement his tactics, strategy and ideas. Some players will adjust, some, unfortunately, will not and will be sold. That’s just the nature of the business.
