Man United are now getting the best out of Amad, with Erik ten Hag speaking positively about the Ivory Coast winger following the Real Betis game.
Manchester United’s pre-season has been largely positive, though injuries have disrupted things this week. The biggest blow is losing Leny Yoro for the next three months.
It’s not all doom and gloom, though. There have been some encouraging signs, particularly from the younger lads. Toby Collyer is receiving great plaudits from fans and coaches alike. So is Amad.
The young winger was signed for big money from Atalanta a few years ago now, though it never looked like the man from the Ivory Coast was ready.
An injury-hit 2023/24 campaign finished with real positivity. He scored some crucial goals, most notably against Liverpool in the FA Cup, setting himself up for success this coming term.
Amad has started the pre-season like a house on fire. Goals. Assists. A real directness. Work ethic. Energy when defending. The young man looks like someone who has absolutely everything.
Now, Erik ten Hag has spoken out on the winger, admitting he is ‘really pleased’ with the performance Amad put in against Real Betis. The gaffer also spoke highly about Amad’s pre-season on the whole.
Here is what the gaffer had to say in full when asked if he was pleased with Amad:
“Yes, he [Amad] is performing well and [he is having] a good pre-season so far. You could see absolutely he is making an uplift in his game. Also in the defending part with the counter-press but also with the pressing he is doing really well. So I am really pleased with his performance.” Ten Hag told ManUtd.com.
The 22-year-old’s time is now. Amad was terrorising the Betis defenders throughout his performance overnight – and that genuine positivity and skill was an absolute pleasure to watch.
Honestly, that right-wing position now should be Amad’s. Antony continues to look below par, while Alejandro Garnacho’s participation at the Copa America means he is a few weeks behind Amad in terms of fitness.
It’s now down to Amad to ensure that he doesn’t yield his spot in the team easily, starting with some similar displays against Manchester City in the Community Shield, then FUlham in the Premier League opener.
