Erik ten Hag was quick to praise Harry Amass after a positive pre-season tour, though he looked to keep the Englishman’s feet firmly on the ground.
Manchester United’s pre-season is now over. The real stuff starts next weekend with the Community Shield.
Once again, there has been a real focus on youth this summer. Their progression into the first-team has been aided by the fact that several key faces have been away with their country. The likes of Toby Collyer have shone this summer, as he looks to prove to Erik ten Hag that he belongs.
Another face has come to the fore, particularly over the last few games; Harry Amass.
The English left-back has looked good in the absence of both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, with Amss getting better with each passing game as he becomes more comfortable in his surroundings.
After the match against Liverpool, Ten Hag praised the emerging starlet, claiming he has made ‘big steps’ over the last couple of weeks, hailing the potential that Amass has.
Check out what the gaffer said in full here:
“I said already the other day: there is a potential, but he [Amass] has to improve. But I think in the last 12 days here in the tour, he has made big steps. He was really tested in defending, and he made a step forward, but there is still a long way to go.” Ten Hag told official club media.
Although Amass is still very raw in some aspects, there’s an elite level player in there for sure. It’s up to Amass to keep working hard, keep impressing and keep taking his chances when they come his way.
With the left-back position always hit hard by injuries, I firmly believe Amass will be kept around the first-team from here on out, waiting for his opportunity to make that position his own.
Defensively, Amass has switched off a couple of times during the tour, but overall, it has been a positive summer for the young man. He has improved loads in such a short space of time and if that rapid development continues, I truly believe it could be his spot in the team to lose before the end of the season.
Well played, Harry!
