Erik ten Hag was delighted with the performance of Amad, whom he praised in his post-match press conference.
Manchester United Football Club actually put in a pretty good performance last time out. The Old Trafford side deserve credit for their bounce back and hopefully, this signals a positive run of form leading up to the FA Cup final.
The 3-2 victory was full of attacking intent, purpose and quality. You can attribute some of it to Bruno Fernandes, whose return was certainly influential. However, Amad also deserves all the credit heading his way right now. It was a performance of genuine class from the young winger.
There was a chance Amad wouldn’t feature in this game after coming off with injury last time out, though credit to the Ivorian who battled through the pain and put in a top-tier performance last night.
His goal restored United’s lead, with the winger displaying his skill with a fantastic strike that left Martin Dubravka helpless in the Newcastle goal.
After the game, manager Erik ten Hag singled out the ‘high potential’ youngster for praise, admitting he’s happy with his development on the whole, while being impressed by his ‘brilliant’ goal.
Check out what Ten Hag had to say in full here:
‘It was a brilliant goal by Amad,’ said Ten Hag, per ManUtd.com. ‘You see how young players are developing, like Amad, and I was really pleased with his performance and it was a great goal. He is very good. He has high potential.’
It does make you wonder why it has taken Ten Hag so long to give Amad his chance. At the end of the day, he’s playing with real maturity and intent, which is more than we’ve seen from Antony all season.
I understand that Amad has been injured and he has been eased back into things, but he’s been back fit for a few months now and his inclusion in the team could well have given United a better chance at qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Amad has been that good, he now has every chance at starting in an FA Cup final in just a week or so. I say that knowing full well Marcus Rashford was back fit and on the bench last night, too.
I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t sure Amad was good enough for this level. My mind is suddenly changing. He was among the best players on that turf last night. Now, it’s about doing it consistently, though it’s up to Ten Hag to keep giving him the opportunities.
