Erik ten Hag explains how Man United can improve after their closely-fought 1-0 victory over West Ham.
The Manchester United train went roaring through the station this weekend, with the Red Devils edging past a spirited West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The 1-0 scoreline felt under threat late on, but credit to United’s defence, who stood firm and managed to keep it tight at the back – which is in stark contrast to how the Reds defended last season.
After the game, the gaffer was quick to praise his players, who managed to hang on. However, Erik ten Hag also identified one area where United need to get better.
The Dutchman believes United could ‘manage this game’ better, while also remaining disciplined in the press.
Check out what the gaffer had to say here:
“But I think we had to manage this game better.” Ten Hag told club media.
“To keep the ball better and also, in the second half, to keep discipline in the pressing. Then you keep more control of the play.
“One again, the spirit in the team is so high and reward to keep the process going. It’s good to feel that fight we have together and we have to keep that going.”
One thing I love about Ten Hag is his consistent calmness. Even in defeat, the gaffer remains level-headed, focused and solely intent on improving United, slowly but surely.
He’s the master planner, who is turning this United side into one that is capable of going toe-to-toe against any team in the world. Sure, there’s still plenty of work to be done, though the early signs are certainly positive.
I’m just loving watching these guys play right now. It’s hard to believe that largely, this is the same group of players who struggled so mightily last season. You do have to give another nod to Ten Hag, whose signings have all been super important at this early stage.
Hopefully, the lads keep working hard and improving, bit by bit. That’s all we supporters ask for.
