Erik ten Hag was asked about the Raphael Varane injury latest during his post-match press conference.
Manchester United Football Club were undoubtedly the better side at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea yesterday, as the Erik ten Hag era continues to move forward.
Sadly, a moment of madness by Scott McTominay left United down late, until Casemiro stepped up with an insane header to rescue a deserved point.
The game itself was marred by a second-half injury to Raphael Varane, who was visibly upset following the incident. The Frenchman was down for a fair while, though I’m still not sure as to what area was affected. It looked like either a knee (please, no!) or an ankle issue…
Anyway, after the game, manager Ten Hag provided an update on Varane’s injury situation. He admitted that right now, it’s difficult to know the severity of the issue, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Check out what Ten Hag had to say on the Raphael Varane injury latest here:
“It is difficult to say how it is now because it is so soon after the game.” Ten Hag told reporters, including ManUtd.com.
“We have to wait 24 hours and then we will know what it is.”
“I can understand, we can all probably understand he would be emotional [if he is out of the World Cup], but I think he also has to wait.
“You don’t know [how bad it is]. Of course he is experienced, but [the] medical [staff] have to do their job, have to make the assessment and set the right diagnosis, and then from there on can come a conclusion.”
The fact that Varane looked so distraught leads us all to believe that the Frenchman is sadly fearing the worst. It could have been a potential season-ender, with his World Cup dreams now looking in tatters at this moment.
Obviously, we’ll all keep our fingers crossed and pray that the problem isn’t as bad as first feared, but you cannot help but think the worst.
Varane will know his body better than anyone. He looked in a bad way while coming off. With a month before Qatar 2022 starts, you do get the feeling this is a real race against time.
For United, it’s just sad. The partnership Varane was forming with Lisandro Martinez looked great. Now, the Frenchman looks to be set for a lengthy spell out of action. Does that mean a return for Harry Maguire? Or does Victor Lindelof now get the nod?
