Erik ten Hag has offered praise to Willy Kambwala, after an outstanding display on his full Man United home debut vs Liverpool.

There can be no doubt that Erik ten Hag is enjoying more success with the younger players in the squad. Perhaps it’s because he can mould them into his playing style, while the senior players are already set in their ways.

Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have been simply outstanding for many months now. Today, though, it was Willy Kambwala’s time to shine.

The young Frenchman has been on the fringes of the first-team since making his debut against West Ham United before the turn of the year. Defensive injuries have struck once again this week, meaning the teenager was back in the mix, against Liverpool no less…

I’m pleased to report Kambwala was comfortably United’s best player. He performs with genuine maturity, a calmness, composure and skill. It was an absolute pleasure to watch him work.

After the game, manager Ten Hag was full of praise for the youngster who is doing ‘brilliant’, while setting him a challenge of doing it consistently.

Check out what the gaffer had to say in full here:

“[Kambwala] has been training a while with us and progressing well,” he said to BBC Sport, per The Independent.

“The next generation need to step in and he is doing brilliant. The challenge for him is doing it consistently.”

“Great opportunity for him. We have other options, like bringing Casemiro in at centre-half, but today he deserved it and he showed it on the pitch.”

I suddenly have plenty of trust in Kambwala. All this talk of signing a new starting centre-back when we have a player like that, right there and ready for his chance.

He was truly outstanding against a side who could well end up lifting the Premier League this season. He deserves all the praise coming his way.

It’s scary to think that Kambwala is just nineteen years old and still learning his craft, playing in such a difficult position like centre-back. He’s only going to improve as the minutes keep coming his way and I’d genuinely stick with him at the heart of defence next week.

Very well played, young man.
