Erik ten Hag provides Alejandro Garnacho injury update

Erik ten Hag has provided an injury update on Alejandro Garnacho, after he picked up a problem against Southampton.

Manchester United Football Club were on the wrong end of a pretty dreadful refereeing performance yesterday, with Anthony Taylor ruling everything in Southampton’s favour.

From the Casemiro red, to the Marcus Rashford penalty shout, to the Kyle Walker-Peters follow-through on Alejandro Garnacho. Everything seemed to go Southampton’s way.

Garnacho was subbed on then subbed off due to his injury issue, with the Argentine winger then spotted leaving the ground on crutches, with his ankle strapped up and in a boot. Understandably, that had us all feeling a little worried.

Since then, though, Ten Hag has provided an injury update on Garnacho after the bad tackle. Thankfully, he doesn’t think the problem is too bad.

“He was a little bit limping after the bad tackle,” Ten Hag told club media.

“In the end they brought on another striker, a big and tall one [Paul Onuachu] and I don’t want to go for risk, we were already downsized to 10 [men].

“I didn’t want to go with players who were [just] 90 per cent. That’s why I called him off but I think it is not too bad.”

It looked like Garnacho’s ankle felt the full force of the scissor tackle. Although Walker-Peters won the ball first, it was the follow-through that was the problem – similar to how Casemiro saw red. Yet Walker-Peters wasn’t even given a card. It’s the double standards that leaves supporters irritated.

The exact severity of the Garnacho problem is not yet known. However, you’d like to think that the winger isn’t going to be out for too long. The Real Betis game on Thursday likely comes too soon, while the FA Cup game this weekend could also come a little quickly.

At the very latest, I’d hope he’s back fully fit following the international break, though I’d also like to see Garnacho win his first cap for his country during that break.

Either way, we send our best to Alejandro and we wish him a speedy recovery.
