Erik ten Hag is said to be a big fan of young midfielder, Toby Collyer.
Manchester United Football Club have never shied away from giving young players their opportunity at the highest level. It’s in their DNA.
Erik ten Hag has continued that mantra. Just ask Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. This summer, it was Toby Collyer’s time to shine.
The young midfielder looked right at home in the middle of the park as soon as he took to the pitch in pre-season. He has been a mainstay in and around the first-team squad ever since.
Now, the Manchester Evening News have provided an update on Collyer, as they seemingly have sources very close to the situation.
They state that Collyer has been a ‘leading prospect’ at Carrington since joining the club in 2022, although he initially went under the radar.
A source has stated that Ten Hag ‘really likes’ the emerging United youngster, who is earning praise for his ‘freakish’ running stats that are only bettered by Bruno Fernandes. That in itself is incredible praise.
Collyer made his first-team debut against Liverpool last weekend and although the result wasn’t ideal, his individual performance was pretty good. I’d argue that he was the best outfield player to wear United colours that day.
The young midfielder has been rewarded with a new contract over the summer, meaning his future is secure. However, he may have to wait a little longer due to the signing of Manuel Ugarte. In the long term, I can see Collyer competing directly with the Uruguayan for the start, particularly when Casemiro eventually moves on.
Either way, it’s encouraging to hear how well Collyer is doing right now.
