Man United are ready to see how badly FC Barcelona want to keep ahold of Frenkie de Jong…

Erik ten Hag’s willingness to start work early at Manchester United had us all dreaming that better days were ahead.

The Dutchman will need money this summer. Far too many players are leaving on free transfers. Those guys will simply have to be replaced – and replaced with genuine quality.

One name that Ten Hag will be incredibly familiar with is Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch manager worked with De Jong during their time together at Ajax.

There have been whispers about De Jong’s Barcelona future being up in the air. If you believe the reports we’ve covered, United are looking to take advantage.

Today, we’ve been given an update in regards to United’s potential chase to sign De Jong – and it comes from ESPN.

Their headline states that Ten Hag is ready to ‘step up’ United’s pursuit of the 25-year-old midfielder. On top of that, United are ‘set to test’ Barcelona’s resolve in regards to De Jong.

ESPN add that United want to sign a midfielder this summer, with De Jong one of the names being considered by the Old Trafford club.

Despite playing a key role at the Camp Nou last term, there’s a feeling the La Liga club ‘may have to offload’ De Jong in order to fund their summer transfer business.

However, the player would have to be convinced to join the club. For me, that’s where United’s interest in De Jong should stop.

For so long, the Reds have brought in players who don’t necessarily want to be here to bring success back to the Theatre of Dreams. Rather, they’re here for one thing only; a payday.

I already get the feeling that if De Jong is to make the move, he’s going to want to be paid extremely handsomely and that’d be his main reasoning behind making the move.

Simply put, United cannot afford to do that any longer. This squad is already full of mercenaries. Adding another one who is here just for the money feels like another big mistake.

Would a Man United move for Frenkie de Jong make sense? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.

  1. United need to get De Jong to make a decision by the end of the month, if he does not want to play for United then we move on. Ruben Neves would be a better choice in any instance, as he is Premier League proven and would not need a year to ‘bed in’.
United also need a defensive midfielder; Axel Witzel is available on a free transfer and Ibrahim Sangare a young as cost effective back up. Axel Witzel would allow United to move forward until 2023, when a bid for Declan Rice can be made
