Ernesto Valverde ‘most likely’ interim appointment for Man United: report

Ernesto Valverde appears to be the man for the interim job at Old Trafford…

Understandably, finding an interim manager has been pretty difficult so far, with Manchester United linked with a whole host of names but nothing seeming close.

The likes of Rudi Garcia, Lucien Favre and many others have been mentioned. My personal favourite rumour was Ralf Rangnick as I genuinely believe he would’ve steadied the ship and left the club in a good place next summer.

However, talkSPORT presenter, Alex Crook, has poured cold water on that rumour. Apparently, the German is set to stay at Lokomotiv Moscow as their Head of Sports and Development.

Crook did name 57-year-old Ernesto Valverde as the ‘most likely’ interim appointment at this stage, though. Which is definitely intriguing.

The Spaniard has done some excellent work in management, most notably with FC Barcelona between 2017-2020.

Check out Alex Crook’s tweet here:

That big-club experience would obviously serve him well if he were to move to Old Trafford on a short-term deal – while I don’t doubt he’d get the best out of our top players from now until the end of the season.

What I like about this appointment is that it has long-term potential should Valverde do well. I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be a candidate for the job on a permanent basis if we were to win or trophy or make genuine progress in the Champions League.

I think it’s pretty clear to those that matter that Michael Carrick simply isn’t ready for the role at this point – with the board recognising United need someone with experience to take us to that next level.

Is Valverde the right man? Well, who knows, but the Reds could surely do worse at this point.
