Ethan Wheatley made his Man United debut last night, with the youngster sending a message to the fans on social media in the aftermath.
Manchester United have always given youth a chance. Perhaps this season, Erik ten Hag’s hand has been somewhat forced in that regard. Injuries have absolutely decimated the senior squad all campaign long, leaving the gaffer with no choice but to throw some kids in at the deep end.
The bench last night for the Sheffield United game was jam-packed with kids, some of them had only played the night prior in a cup final – including Ethan Wheatley.
The young forward scored both goals as United beat City 2-1 in that final, looking like a class act and leading the line immensely well.
What a whirlwind 24 hours it was for Wheatley, who was then handed his senior debut with about 10 minutes left of last night’s game.
Shortly after the match had ended, Wheatley took to social media to react after making his ‘dream’ debut, and he was clearly buzzing following his first appearance for his ‘boyhood’ club. This is what it’s all about.

Although we only were given a glimpse of Wheatley, he looked comfortable in the side among senior professionals. He worked hard, pressured the Sheffield United defenders and got into some decent positions. Given a little more time, he may well have scored and capped off a perfect start to his senior career.
Wheatley is the sort of talent that can skip the loan system completely and be thrust straight into first-team action on a regular basis at Old Trafford. That’s just how skilled and gifted he is.
I would imagine the Stockport-born-forward has a good chance at going on pre-season tour this coming summer, which would be another huge step in the right direction for the talented teenager who is looking to make a name for himself.
