Journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on Man United loanee Hannibal, who finds himself out of their team at present…
Manchester United’s January transfer window continued the theme of moving on from players, as INEOS looks to clear the decks and hit the reset button. Several players left, largely on loan, as Erik ten Hag tried to trim down his playing squad.
Among those guys who left, but could still have a possible future at Old Trafford, was Hannibal. The Tunisia international had several offers on the table, though eventually settled on Sevilla in Spain. At the time, I questioned the decision as I wasn’t sure he’d break into their team…
Well, here we are in March and Hannibal isn’t playing for the La Liga side. He has more bookings (2) than starts (1). He’s made just three appearances in total. Not great.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has explained why the United loanee hasn’t been playing – and it does make sense…
Here’s what Fabrizio Romano had to say in full here:
“We know it’s not been an easy time for Hannibal Mejbri since he left United to go on loan to Sevilla.” Romano told CaughtOffside. “Many fans have been asking me about why Hannibal hasn’t played much, and the reality is that Sevilla are in trouble, it’s a difficult season for them so the manager prefers to play experienced players as there’s pressure; that’s why is not easy for young players.”
Romano carried on: “I think it’s normal, it happens when a club is in difficult situation. Hannibal will fight to find more space in the next weeks, he remains committed.”
Sevilla are sitting in fourteenth, which is uncharacteristic for a side that’s consistently doing well in the Europa League. They’re placing their faith in veterans rather than young emerging starlets, meaning Hannibal has been completely pushed out.
I know hindsight is a wonderful thing, but this is just some poor decision-making from the player, his agent and United. Particularly when Premier League clubs like Everton could have utilised him much more often (and in a league where he sees his long-term future!).
Hopefully, the situation does change between now and the end of the season, allowing Hannibal to showcase his talents and ability. However, if it doesn’t, this could genuinely cost him a career at the top level. United aren’t in a position where they can hang around and they’re trying to thin out the squad as much as possible. Hannibal could well be another casualty unless he starts proving his worth soon.
