Fabrizio Romano says Man United turned down the chance to sign Boubacar Kamara

Man United turned down the chance to sign Boubacar Kamara late in the transfer window, Fabrizio Romano claims.

As we know all too well, this transfer window was a quiet one for Manchester United in terms of incomings. I guess that somewhat makes sense given our manager is only here on an interim basis…

However, the many gaping holes within that first-team squad make it somewhat hard to believe. You look at the midfield area and can only roll your eyes, particularly as Donny van de Beek has been allowed to leave on loan.

Well, it wasn’t without opportunity. The story comes from Fabrizio Romano, who claims that United actually were offered the chance to sign a defensive midfielder late in January – but said no… The player? Boubacar Kamara.

Romano told his Here We Go podcast: “Manchester United were offered the opportunity to sign Boubacar Kamara in the last days of the window but they turned down this chance because they will invest more money for the new manager. They want to wait and see what’s best.”

Kamara, 22, currently plies his trade for Marseille in Ligue 1, with his stock on the rise and big clubs circling.

So why is he being offered out if he’s that good, I hear you ask? Well, the midfielder becomes a free agent this summer, meaning Marseille would lose him for free.

That also suggests United could have picked him up on a super-cheap deal, while also beating the inevitable heavy competition that they’ll face when the summer rolls around.

I’ll be honest, there are two sides to this and I understand both. United probably don’t want to take a gamble on a player that the new permanent manager may end up liking. However, the blatant ignorance of an area of the field that needed desperate work has me worried about our top-four prospects this season.

I guess all we can do is wait and see how this one plays out…

Want more? Man United apparently have eyes on Mauricio Pochettino for the manager’s job this summer.
