Manchester United have struggled this season, particularly defensively. Despite the arrival of Raphael Varane, there’s still work to be done in that area of the field.
Simply put, we have decent depth without a whole lot of quality. The likes of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and even Harry Maguire have all been below-par for long stretches. Those issues stem further down, too. Axel Tuanzebe has struggled for minutes this term due to inconsistencies within his own game.
A loan move to Napoli felt like the ideal scenario for the young defender. After all, Tuanzebe would be playing at a high level, for a top-class club.
That does bring it’s own problems, mind. And it’s a high-pressure scenario. Napoli are third in Serie A and winning games is an absolute must.
Well, on his full debut in the Coppa Italia. It couldn’t have gone any worse for Tuanzebe. They’d ship five to Fiorentina in a 5-2 loss… Tuanzebe himself would struggle in his one-on-one battle against Dusan Vlahovic. That only compounded things for the new Naples man…
These loan moves are all about first impressions. Tuanzebe couldn’t really have made a worse start to life in Italy, meaning those players and his new coaching staff will now be having doubts about what he can offer. I just hope he gets the chance to put it right with another start soon…
As you’d imagine, the United fans all over Twitter were disappointed with what they saw from the loanee on his full debut. He simply wasn’t good enough and that has to change.
