Fenerbahce close to reaching agreement to sign Juan Mata from Man United: report

Manchester United seemingly have big plans for the 2020 summer transfer window, with Jadon Sancho’s name the most commonly linked.

Well, to balance the books, a player or two may well have to leave Old Trafford. Apparently, Juan Mata is amongst those who could well be exiting stage left…

The story comes from Sansursuz Futbol journalist Ahmet Ercanlar, translated via Sport Witness, who say that Fenerbahce are intent on sorting a deal to sign Juan Mata this summer.

Apparently, an agreement is close as the Turkish club is confident about signing the United star who has made 33 appearances this season, scoring three goals.

Mata has a contract at United until 2021, which given the fact he’s 32, isn’t out of the ordinary. The Reds don’t tend to offer more than one-year rolling deals to any players over the age of thirty.

I think it’s fair to say we all love Mata. The work he does with Common Goal is just brilliant, while he’s commonly referred to as the nicest guy in football. I wouldn’t argue with that point.

However, football is a business. He’s barely featured this season and when he has, they’ve largely been substitute appearances when the game is already over. What’s the point in keeping his hefty wages around? Particularly if United are looking at strengthening further in his position(s) when the transfer window finally opens.

Perhaps a move to Turkey, where Mata will potentially be a big fish in a small pond, would be ideal for his career. Who knows, playing him in his favoured #10 role may help the loveable Spaniard rediscover that brilliant form he displayed week-in-week-out at Chelsea.

Anyway for now, we’ll leave you with our favourite Mata video. This first touch is insane!

Should Fenerbahce sign Juan Mata? Should United let him leave? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
