Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez have been named in the latest BBC Team of the Week after Man United’s 1-0 win over Southampton.
The start of the season was a harsh reality check for Manchester United Football Club. The Red Devils would lose their first couple of matches in poor style, though the two games since have been drastically better.
Beating Liverpool is always nice, however, you have to back that up by winning your next game. United had to fight for every inch against Southampton, with Erik ten Hag’s side squeaking a 1-0 victory.
The game itself was built upon a solid defensive line, coupled with one moment of brilliance from those out there in United colours. For that performance, a Man United duo was named in the BBC Team of the Week. It has been a while since we’ve seen that happen…

First up we have Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine is turning into a real rock at the back for the Red Devils. He was outstanding against Jurgen Klopp’s men, while he was just as good at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.
It was really good to see Martinez put that awful Brentford display behind him at the first opportunity. Hopefully, this is just the start of an excellent partnership with Raphael Varane.
Bruno Fernandes’ last year has been pretty tough. The goals and assists have dried up, with fans becoming frustrated at his carelessness when in possession. That’s just the nature of his game. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t.
Against Southampton, it needed his brilliant finish to win the game as Southampton’s defence remained resolute for the most part. That’s the sort of quality the Portugal international can bring. Not to mention he’s taken on a leadership role while wearing the captain’s armband.
Well played, lads!
