Manchester United’s young defence has done well for the most part this season, but at times the inexperienced group have been exposed. If they had a senior figure alongside them, then the number of goals we conceded would be greatly reduced.
Lets have a look at five potential centre-back signings for this summer:
Mats Hummels
The obvious choice would be Hummels. At 26, he is full of experience and he knows how to win at any cost. He will put his body on the line for his teammates, is a great threat in the air and can play out from the back.
Nicolas Otamendi
Otamendi is another superb defender. Strong, physical and aerially superb – all attributes that would make him perfect for the Premier League game.
Dante
The experienced Brazilian would be the cheap option. Reports in Germany say that a deal has been agreed for the centre-back, but honestly this one worries me. He’s slow, prone to mistakes and can get exposed to forwards with power.
Benedikt Howedes
This would be a shrewd signing. Howedes has been around for a while, and wouldn’t be a huge chunk out of the transfer budget. The Schalke man has it all in terms of ability, and his style of play is made for Manchester United.
Diego Godin
The Atletico defenders’ biggest asset is his aerial prowess. He will score the club a few goals a season from his head, and is one of the most solid defenders around. The problem with this one would be luring him away from Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone, which would be a task in itself.

Howedes at centre back & Antonio Rudiger at right back. Both versatile, Howedes can play anywhere along the back line & Rudiger can play right back, centre back & defensive midfield. Neither are injury prone.
