Manchester United are alarmingly short at the centre-back position as we head into the new season – especially when you consider into the fact that all three senior centre-halves will be on the pitch at the same time in Louis van Gaal’s new five at the back system.
Yes, we have youngsters like Tyler Blackett and Michael Keane who can come in and do a good job for the most-part, but theres nothing like witnessing a new signing flourish under the Old Trafford floodlights. We’ve decided to have a look at five potential centre-backs who could be targeted before the close of the window.
Mats Hummels
The 26-year old is one of the best centre-backs in world football, and Manchester United are reportedly a huge fan of the German’s. He had an excellent World Cup, and has been at the heart of a solid Dortmund defence for the last few seasons.
Hummels is apparently interested in a move away, but Dortmund’s unwillingness to sell could prove to be the stumbling block.

Thomas Vermaelen
The Arsenal captain has found himself out of the fold due to excellent performances by Mertesacker & Koscielny, and injuries certainly hampered his season, too. Louis van Gaal does like to have one left-footed centre-back in his defence, and Vermaelen will bring a lot of experience too.
Barcelona are also interested in his services though, and it may be hard to persuade him to choose us over the Catalan side without the lack of European football.

Daley Blind
Blind was one of the stars of the World Cup, and his versatility certainly makes him an attractive proposition. He can play left-back, central midfield as well as centre-back, and at 24 he still has a lot of developing to do.
He knows Louis van Gaal, and the 5-3-2 formation that the new coach has adopted at Manchester United. He’d certainly be a good option.

Mehdi Benetia
The Roma man is fast becoming renowned as one of the best centre-backs in world football after an excellent season in Italy. The Moroccan is somewhat of a late bloomer, after only being noticed over the past twelve months. Now 27, he’s approaching the peak of his powers – hence why Roma are demanding a top fee for him.
Chances of the move happening – 20%
Ron Vlaar
Perhaps one of the best World Cup performances by a defender. ‘Concrete Ron’ didn’t give any of the best forwards in the world a moments rest all tournament, and was at the heart of Holland’s defence throughout. The Villa man is looking to move away from Birmingham, and Louis van Gaal could well be tempted if he cannot lure one of the bigger names off the list.
