Five things we learned: Villa 1-1 Manchester United

1. Even Louis van Gaal makes mistakes

Manchester United’s setup could’ve cost them a couple of points today, and thats down to Louis van Gaal. The Dutchman started with Darren Fletcher who played poorly, and the three at the back didn’t help matters either.

He then subbed off Antonio Valencia and Robin van Persie who were both providing United with some decent chances. The game changed when these two went off, and United didn’t look like scoring afterwards.

2. Radamel Falcao knows where the back of the net is

El Tigre hasn’t had many opportunities to start from the off [three to be precise], and he made the most of that today by scoring a superb header. Falcao is a natural goal scorer, and given a run of games and an injury-free spell, he could well be key to a spot in the top four this season.

3. Juan Mata struggles away from home

Juan Mata played a blinder last week against Liverpool – scoring one and grabbing an assist for another. But a pattern is emerging, he seems to flourish at home and struggle away. Maybe its down to the counter attacking football United like to play away, and he doesn’t have the pace to keep up with the likes of Di Maria and Rooney.

4. Wayne Rooney is versatile, but he’s better up front

Rooney played in the centre of the park today and he was pretty average. He pings nice passes out wide but he needs to play them with more pace rather than floating them. He’s much more of a threat the higher up the pitch he plays.

5. Jonny Evans makes rash decisions that could cost the team

The Northern Irishman retained his place in the team today, and rushed, ragged defending could’ve cost his team more than two points today. He was at fault for Benteke’s goal, and he looked nervous whenever the Belgian came forward with the ball. He must improve.
