Manchester United have made an average start to the season, with Jose Mourinho’s men bringing in some impressive results and performances alongside some poor ones. The consistency obviously isn’t there just yet, but over time you’d imagine that will come.
One former Manchester United player-turned-pundit Michael Owen still isn’t convinced by our midfield, and has claimed that the club simply have to turn to Michael Carrick to make things tick. He has also stated Morgan Schneiderlin would be ideal for the role – but he just isn’t good enough.
“When you think that the strength of Liverpool’s game is deep runs from midfield, I bet my bottom dollar that it won’t be Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba against Liverpool at Anfield. He [Mourinho] would be really brave to do that.
“I think it should be Michael Carrick or Morgan Schneiderlin, although I don’t think he’s quite good enough to be a Manchester United regular.” Michael Owen continued.
“Marouane Fellaini I don’t think understands that role in this team so much.”
“I would pick Carrick – or you could pick Herrera and Carrick and have Pogba as a number 10.”
Schneiderlin came into Old Trafford with huge promise and many thought he’d be that defensive midfielder that we’ve been lacking recently. However, his performances just haven’t been good enough when called upon, and you wouldn’t be surprised to see him sold by Jose in the not too distant future.
Personally, a midfield three seems like the way to go. Michael Carrick in behind Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba would be lovely, as it’d allow our two creative players to get forward much more often.
