Manchester United Football Club has endured an injury-hit term under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though credit where it’s due, this club is well-positioned to finish in the Premier League’s top-four.
The Old Trafford outfit haven’t let injury issues hold them back, though recently, several have made their return. Just last night, Timothy Fosu-Mensah made his first start for United’s U23s since being sidelined since last April. What a great feeling that must’ve been for him.
Anyway, speaking after the game Fosu-Mensah was full of praise for his United teammate Eric Bailly, saying that the 25-year-old star has been ‘like a brother’ and has always been there for the Dutchman. Class.
“Eric is a good guy, he’s like a big brother for me,” he told the Manchester Evening News after the game.
“He’s there for me in bad times, here’s there for me in good times, so I’m happy that he’s back. He did well against Chelsea and he did well against Club Brugge in the Europa League. He’s a very good person.
“We’ve been working hard together for very long together, as well, so it’s good.”
Having that excellent working relationship, both on and off the field, is all-important for any team who wants to enjoy long-term success. Fosu-Mensah may not have been under first-team consideration with Jose Mourinho at the helm, but now he’s back fit, perhaps he can make an impression on the Baby Faced Assassin?
Right now, it’s about getting back to full fitness and those minutes for the U23s against Stoke City would have definitely felt great for Fosu-Mensah yesterday.
“I’m happy to play 90 minutes again, it’s good,” he added.
“[There were] dark days but you have to know at the other end of the tunnel there’s light. So you just have to keep going, have your goals and work towards those goals.
“It makes me happy to play games and I was happy to get an assist, for the team to play well and win the game.
“The goal now is to keep my body good and keep working hard.”
It’s going to be a gradual process for Fosu-Mensah. Don’t forget, though, how brilliant he was for United’s first-team when making his debut under Louis van Gaal as a teenager.
The talent is so obviously there. Now, it’s about staying injury-free and really trying to kick on. After all, he’s still only 22 and there’s plenty of years ahead for the Dutchman.
Hopefully, he can continue to play for the reserves, maybe make a few senior match-day squads, get a good pre-season under his belt and go on tour. Then from there, United and Fosu-Mensah will have to re-evaluate and decide what’s best for his career.
