Manchester United and youth go hand-in-hand. The Red Devils have never shied away from throwing teenagers in at the deep end.
In recent memory, Marcus Rashford’s superb appearance against FC Midtjylland springs to mind. It’s what makes United so special, they’re willing to give academy products a chance.
This weekend’s game against Cardiff City is the perfect opportunity to continue that mantra. So-much-so that the Manchester Evening News says as many as four youngsters could make their full first-team debuts on Sunday.
First up we have Tahith Chong. The fluffy-haired Dutchman has made a few substitute appearances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, including playing against Huddersfield a few days ago. But with our attack looking toothless, why not throw the 19-year-old into the mix? At least he looks like he’s ready to fight for the badge.
Next is the one and only Mason Greenwood. Without doubt, this young boy is the next big thing at Old Trafford. It’s just a case of if rather than when, and his 30 goals at youth level this season simply cannot be ignored. If it wasn’t for injury he would have already made his full debut I think, but hopefully, he can get himself fit and ready to go for the final day.
Then you have my personal favourite, and perhaps the most underrated youngster at United these days; James Garner. The midfielder has been massively unlucky to not get his chance but this weekend could be perfect. Ander Herrera seems to be leaving, he needs replacing. Why not see what he can do against a Premier League opponent?
Finally you have the wildcard, Lee O’Connor. He has been in first-team training after a brilliant season at reserve level. Full-back is a problem position for United, so why not see what O’Connor can do? I remember Demetri Mitchell getting a similar opportunity with Jose Mourinho in charge, so O’Connor has every reason to believe he could get his shot.
